WORLDBUILDER
Cinematic Environment Generator
by PlayMode Audio
Press One Button. Hear a World That Has Never Existed.
Create vast alien landscapes, abandoned space stations, submerged ruins, and mechanical nightmares from pure synthesis. WORLDBUILDER transforms a single click into a living, evolving cinematic environment — no samples, no complicated sound design, just endless worlds waiting to be discovered.
11 World Types · 4 Sound Layers · 7 Synthesis Engines · Zero Samples
Every World Starts with Silence.
Somewhere between a synthesizer and a sound designer, there is WORLDBUILDER.
Choose a world type. Press GENERATE WORLD. In seconds, a complete sonic environment emerges from nothing — deep atmospheric drones, breathing metallic textures, slow mechanical movements, and distant signals that appear and disappear like something alive in the darkness.
Every generation creates a new world. Every world has its own character. And when you discover something extraordinary, you can save it, recall it, and build upon it.
Nothing is played back. Everything is created in real time.
WORLDBUILDER uses seven synthesis engines to construct complex environments entirely through DSP. From coloured noise and detuned oscillators to metallic resonators, evolving FM tones, and self-generated granular textures, every sound is built inside the plugin.
No sample libraries. No pre-recorded ambience. Just pure synthesis shaping entire worlds.
11 Worlds. Infinite Possibilities.
Each world type provides a different sonic identity, giving your soundscapes a starting point — from vast and atmospheric to dark, mechanical, and unpredictable.
- Alien Planet — Strange atmospheres from unknown worlds.
- Deep Space — Vast, weightless drones and distant cosmic signals.
- Abandoned Space Station — Cold machinery, metallic resonances, and empty corridors.
- Ancient Ruins — Mysterious textures and echoes of forgotten civilizations.
- Industrial Nightmare — Heavy drones, mechanical pulses, and relentless tension.
- Underwater World — Deep pressure, submerged movement, and muffled textures.
- Dark Forest — Organic atmospheres and unsettling environmental details.
- Biomechanical World — Living textures fused with mechanical movement.
- Cybernetic Environment — Synthetic signals and futuristic sonic structures.
- Experimental Abstract — Unpredictable combinations beyond familiar sound design.
- Dark Caves — Deep resonances and shadowy, enclosed spaces.
Press GENERATE WORLD for a completely new environment. Use VARIATION to explore related possibilities, or lock individual layers while everything around them changes.
Four Layers. One Living Environment.
WORLDBUILDER builds each soundscape from four independent layers, giving you control over how the world sounds, moves, and evolves.
ENVIRONMENT — The foundation of your world: deep drones, noise beds, and atmospheric weight.
TEXTURE — Metallic resonances and complex tonal details that give each environment its identity.
MOVEMENT — Continuous modulation, shifting harmonics, and evolving sonic motion.
EVENTS — Signals, pulses, metal strikes, and rising sweeps that bring unexpected activity into the scene.
Enable, disable, or lock any layer. Keep the elements you love and regenerate the rest.
Let Your World Evolve.
A cinematic environment should never feel static. WORLDBUILDER’s Evolution Engine continuously reshapes your soundscape, moving through changes in level, filtering, spatial depth, and event density.
Choose your pace, freeze a moment, or let the environment evolve automatically. For more deliberate control, switch to MANUAL mode and automate the evolution position directly from your DAW.
Shape the Journey
The Evolution Curve lets you design the larger movement of your soundscape with six curve shapes:
- Rise / Fall — Gradually build or release tension.
- Swell / Dip — Create waves of intensity and space.
- Waves — Keep the environment in continuous motion.
- Build & Drop — Shape dramatic transitions and cinematic impact.
Set the duration from 10 seconds to 5 minutes, and loop the curve for continuously evolving environments.
Morph Between Worlds
Use the four-corner Environment Morph pad to move between Deep, Organic, Motion, and Chaos. Blend different characteristics with a single drag, customize the corner states, and introduce drift for environments that never settle into exactly the same place.
Four LFOs, seven modulation shapes, and 28 destinations provide even more control over the details.
From Background Atmosphere to Active Sound Design.
WORLDBUILDER doesn’t just create ambience. It can introduce events exactly when your scene needs them.
The Event Generator produces four types of sonic activity:
- Signal — Alien transmissions and strange electronic calls.
- Pulse — Rhythmic mechanical activity.
- Metal — Resonant strikes and metallic impacts.
- Sweep — Rising and falling transitions.
Adjust density, probability, regularity, and octave range to control how often events occur and how they behave.
Trigger events directly using MIDI notes or CC controls. Play the alien signal voice melodically, or use MIDI to perform sounds in sync with your picture.
For hands-on control, five macros — Character, Movement, Density, Depth, and Intensity — let you reshape the entire environment quickly.
Finish the Sound. Fill the Space.
Built-in master effects help transform raw synthesis into a finished cinematic soundscape.

- Drive
- Chorus
- Stereo Delay

Use the Evolution Scope to follow the last 40 seconds of your environment and see how its sonic activity changes over time.
With 80 factory worlds across eight categories, WORLDBUILDER gives you an extensive starting library — and the tools to take every preset somewhere new.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does WORLDBUILDER use samples?
No. All sounds are generated in real time by its synthesis engines. No external sample libraries are required.
Do I need MIDI to use it?
No. Press PLAY in your DAW and WORLDBUILDER generates and evolves its environment automatically. MIDI is optional for triggering events and playing the signal voice.
Can I recreate a world I generated earlier?
Yes. Worlds use recallable seeds, and presets can store your generated environments.
Can I synchronize its evolution to my DAW?
Yes. The plugin includes host-synced LFOs, MIDI control, and automation for hands-on and timeline-based sound design.
Is there a macOS version?
WORLDBUILDER is currently available for Windows as a 64-bit VST3 instrument.
